On-Page SEO Best Practices for Internet Marketers And Bloggers

When it comes to SEO there are two section of it that Google pays attention to.

The first being On-Page SEO and the second being Off-Page SEO.

With overall SEO Google considers over 200 + ranking factors.

Making it impossible for anyone to focus on every one of the those SEO factors.

For now lets focus on the on-page SEO factors and the ones that we most often mess up that impact our search rankings and traffic.

These simple tweaks will help you improve your search rankings and the overall quality of your blog with Google.

This is a three phases approach to optimizing your on-page SEO and these simple tips help increase your blog’s traffic.

Phase #1 — Eliminate Duplicate Content

One of the biggest problem bloggers face is duplicate content due to the variety of SEO plugin they try out.

When I mean duplicate content, it does not mean that I have the same post published on several pages.

But different URLs that reflect the same content. The following instances will talk about the various duplicate content.

Removing Duplicate Meta Tags

From time to time your site will generate duplicate meta tags. Its important that you pay attention and never leave your article meta blank and always type in unique meta data.

There are several ways that duplicate meta tags are generated even without your knowledge.

You can use Google Webmaster to find out if your site has duplicate content and which articles are being affected.

Adding No Follow / No Index To Comment Pages

Every time your article or blog post receives a comment, that comment receives a unique URL in WordPress.

As strange as it might sound, the new URL has the actual blog post as well. Meaning, you can load up a comment URL and it would load up the entire post with the comment.

This way when Google looks at it, its as though you have two different URLs but the same content on them.

While WordPress does take care of this, there are several instances that it misses it out and you end up finding several such URLs.

Its good to add a no follow to such URLs or no index them.

Removing Brand Name From Internal Pages

Google at one point has a note on their webmaster guide that talks about branding pages with the business name.

While this is a good thing, it also causes some duplicate content issues.

Even that single repetition made a difference in the way my blog ranked.

When the same word is repeated in all your blog titles, Google marks it as duplicate content.

Phase #2 — Ensure Proper Site Structure & Linking

Tweak The Way Internal Linking Works

Category linking to article linking. earlier, I had tag linking, category linking and more.

Content was linking all over the place.

Now importance is given to article pages and link structures are defined to give priority to every article I publish.

By adding categories to the navigation, I automatically get a new link every time an article is published so I don’t have to worry about it.

Also removing tags and other unwanted links on the blog can help reduce outbound links and boost your PageRank which contributes to your search rankings.

Define Combination of Keywords

One of the major reasons blogs and websites are penalized is because of an exact keyword usage.

I’ve shifted focus to using a combination of keywords tat help boost my blogs rankings and drive traffic.

These combinations make your articles look good and not like you have written them for search engines instead of your readers.

Primary Keyword – Make money online
Keyword combination – Make cash online, Create cash online, make cash working, make dough online

Phase #3 — Optimize On-Page SEO

On-Page SEO was made simple and easy with the SEOPressor WordPress Plugin.

Removing Invalid 404 Pages From Search

Every time you change your blogs URL structure you literally break all the article links and backlinks to your blog.

This will cause it to accumulate 404 pages, for which you will need to set up redirects.

While the 404 redirects will take care of the link value that came to my blog, too many redirects also slow down your blog and Google does not like slow sites.

You can simple have Google remove URLs from search functionality and removed all unwanted URLs from search altogether or you can set a no follow and no index rule in your robot.txt file.

Reduce Redirects

As mentioned in the previous point, redirects can hog resources and slow down your blog which will impact search rankings.

Wherever possible remove redirects.

Alternately you can always set up a permanent redirect via htaccess. If your not familiar with editing htaccess files you can always hire a WordPress support personal to help you with it.

Speed Up Blog Load Time

Improving site speed can make a huge difference to the reader and also in Google’s view you are a good blog that cares about user experience.

I removed unwanted plugins, optimized code with StudioPress themes, set up w3 cache, removed unwanted images and banner advertisements.

You can check out my articles on site speed improvements and improve blog performance and you will realize how fast my blog loads.

  1. Thanks for sharing this with us. Do you have any article that explains completely about SEOPressor? I also need to know which SEO plugin is providing LSI feature nowadays. In the past, EasyWPSEO had that LSI feature and now they’ve removed that feature. So, please tell me any alternative plugin. Thanks in advance.
